Introduction
IELTS, an English examination, which stands for International English Language Testing System, is designed to assess the language proficiency of those who want to pursue their study or career in English speaking countries like USA, UK, Canada, Australia or New Zealand etc. IELTS is jointly managed by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, British Council and IDP : IELTS Australia.
IELTS Academic
IELTS Academic Test is for those who intend to attend university for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree or for those who are aspirants to work with any professional organization.
IELTS General Training
People who want to study courses below degree level, to get work-related training or to emigrate to any country where English is used as a language of communication, will need to take IELTS General Training.


Test Format
Having been divided into four sections, this examination lasts for approximately two hours and 45 minutes.
Listening (Academic/General)
No. of questions: 40
Time Limit: 40 minutes – 30 minutes for testing, plus 10 minutes for transferring the answers to an answer sheet.
Reading (Academic/General):
No. of questions: 40
Time Limit: 60 minutes – 20 minutes for each section to finish your test on time, you will not have any extra time to transfer your answer in answer sheet.
Writing (Academic)
Time Limit: 60 minutes (20 for task-1, 40 for task-2)
- Summarize or compare the data represented by any type of graph like a bar graph or a line graph; describe or explain the process,
for instance: a process of making chocolates. - An essay writing.
Speaking (Academic/General):
Time Limit: 11 to 15 minutes.
- Answer to the questions about self, family, work and hobbies
- Speak on a particular topic given by an examiner for 1-2 minutes.
- Answer to the questions connected to the topic of task-2.
Overall scoring
All four sections of this test are equally weighted and the range of score in each of these four sections is from 1 to 9. However, the final score is the average of the total score obtained in four individual sections.
