Introduction

TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language. TOEFL iBT, Internet Based Test, measures the mastery of the candidates who want to pursue their study, especially in US or Canada where English is used as a medium of instruction. This test is developed and administered by ETS(Educational Testing Service).

Test format

This examination lasts for approximately four and a half hours.

In the course of the test, students are expected to show their talent in blending all four skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing tasks. Students may be asked to perform tasks that combine more than one skills.

Reading

Time Limit: 60 to 80 minutes.
Questions:
36 to 56 questions.
Tasks: Read 3 or 4 passages from academic texts and answer questions.

Listening

Time Limit: 60 to 90 minutes.
Questions: 34 to 51 questions.
Tasks: Listen to lectures, classroom discussions and conversations and answer questions.

Speaking

Time Limit: 20 minutes.
Questions: 6 tasks.
Tasks: Express an opinion on a familiar topic; speak based on reading and listening.

Writing

Time Limit: 50 minutes.
Questions: 2 tasks.
Tasks: Write essay responses based on reading and listening tasks; support an opinion in writing.

Overall scoring

All four sections of this test are equally weighted and the range of score in each of these four sections is from 1 to 30. However, the final score will be from 1 to 120.
